Description

The increasing popularity of book clubs and the word of mouth recommendations of social media have more people engaging in conversations about contemporary “popular†fiction. This course gives students the tools to engage with popular, mainstream literature on a critical level. Required readings will explore a range of diverse issues, including class, race, gender, and sexual identity, along with the nature of relationships, both with the self and others. Students will be encouraged to examine not only literary genre, but the personal, historical, cultural, and social contexts reflected in popular fiction. Through sustained inquiry, this course will challenge students to come to deeper understandings about their own experiences and the complex world around them. Prerequisite: “C†or higher in ENG101 or ENG 102.
